How to Upload and Use Opentype Fonts in Canva

Using our fonts in Canva opens up new possibilities for creative projects, and we’re here to help you make the most of it. Although Canva currently supports only standard characters and doesn’t display OpenType features like special characters and ligatures, there’s a simple way to work around this limitation. Follow the steps below to seamlessly incorporate these unique elements from our fonts into your Canva designs.

Step 1: Uploading Your Custom Fonts to Canva

To use custom fonts in Canva, you’ll need a Canva Pro account, which allows font uploads. Once you’re set up, here’s how to upload your fonts:

  1. Create a new design and navigate to Brand Kit from the left sidebar.
  2. Select Upload a font under the “Brand Fonts” section.
  3. Choose the font file you want to use (OTF or TTF format) and upload it to Canva.

Now that your fonts are available in Canva, we can move on to adding those special touches.

Step 2: Accessing Special Characters and Ligatures

For Mac Users

  1. Open Font Book on your Mac and locate the font you uploaded.
  2. Scroll through and select the special character or ligature you’d like to use.
  3. Copy it directly from Font Book.
  4. Switch over to Canva and paste the character into your design’s text field.

For Windows Users

  1. Open Character Map by pressing the Windows key and searching for it.
  2. Select your font, then go to Group by > Unicode Subrange and choose “Private Use Characters” to view alternate glyphs.
  3. Copy the character, and then paste it into your Canva design.

Using this method, you can effortlessly incorporate unique glyphs, making your Canva projects truly distinctive. Remember, a small extra step here allows you to get the full creative potential of our fonts, even with Canva’s current limitations.
